Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas has served as the military training center for K9s since WW2. In 2013 a monument called Military Working Dog Teams National Monument was erected at Lackland to honor the K9 veterans who have served alongside our brave men and women soldiers. Military K9s have been tasked with jobs such as scouting and bomb detection, many have even seen combat. We found several inspiring stories about 6 amazing K9 Veterans that we are excited to share with you. Do take a moment and read all the details, I promise you will be moved. Here are some of our favorite stories. Sallie, a Staffordshire Terrier, served with the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. She faced many battles alongside her soldiers, including the now infamous Battle of Gettysburg. During the battle, she was separated from her soldiers and was later found after the fighting ended guarding wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Chips, a German Shepherd/Collie/Husky mix was the most decorated K9 soldier of WW2. He served in General Patton’s Seventh Army in Germany, Italy, Sicily, France, and North Africa. While in Sicily, Chips and his fellow troops became pinned down by machine-gun fire from a pillbox. Chips singlehandedly charged into the pillbox and captured all four Italian soldiers inside! |
